Artist Statement
My practice explores the notion of identity and the aspects that influence it. Within society identity is perceived as something that is culturally inherited but I think that it is also made up of our experiences, our memories and our relationships. Being transracially adopted has been something that has shaped how I view my identity. Using ideas of post-colonial identity has helped me to look at the displacement of cultural identity: specifically ethnicity, which can be imposed through adoption. Being transracially adopted has contributed to the displacement I feel towards my own cultural identity.
My work is structured as an autobiographical narrative using dance and textiles: I express my emotions through movement and the process of hand embroidery. I want to interrogate the question: what makes up our identity? I want my work to provoke the viewer to a place of reflection on these wider ideas of identity for themselves. To lead them to think about their own identity and the experiences, memories and relationships that shape it.
